Hi all,

Welcome to the latest Behind the Beard blog! Reality are entering a real time of change. It is both very exciting and very scary, really relying on God’s timing and provision.

Abi Fincham, our Kirby Muxloe youth worker, left us in the summer. Followed by Bez, our longest standing employee of 14 years! With our linked churches praying into the renewal of contracts we are going to be hitting a real time of change in 2019.

To help us look into the future we have launched our new ‘Friends of Reality’ Scheme. We have a vision for the next few years but we don’t yet have the money to do all that God wants us to do. We would love for you to become a Friend of Reality and support us £10pcm to help us reach out with the good news of Jesus to young people across the UK. We would invite you to our events, send you regular newsletters and most importantly tell you what we are in need of prayer for. If you do want any more details, please email me on ben@realityyouthproject.co.uk, talk to a Reality employee, browse the website, or follow this link; https://www.realityyouthproject.co.uk/friends-of-reality/

We are in a time where your prayers are of great value to us. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

May you be blessed!

Ben Worth

At Reality we are getting very excited about a new initiative that we are launching this year. I would like to introduce (drumroll) ‘Engage:’. After a week of us praying and thinking we decided on an event that actively engages with relevant and possible uncomfortable world issues. As Christians we are often consumers to news and issues. We offer to pray, we may support charities related to our passions. But this new event seeks to go a step further, in order that we Engage: with God and Engage: with the community.

The week-long event will run in the third week of the summer holiday, this year that is 5th-9th August. We are going to be based at Central Baptist Church in Leicester. Our focus for this year is to Engage: with Homelessness in Leicester.

The idea of a large group of young people meeting together for a week of teaching and practical missional work in our county really stirs something in me. These young people will grow with a different attitude to Homelessness. Actively seeking to help and support those unfortunate enough to live life without a home.

However, this initiative brings with it an element of sadness. With the launch of Engage we are seeing the end of Reality’s very successful ncounter summer event. It’s important that we don’t forget the richness of what ncounter offered to Leicestershire. After over a decade of these events, hundreds of young people have been equipped to take on life with a heart for Jesus. Along with what must be thousands of community members being served, blessed and shared the Gospel by these young people. I see ncounter as a huge and strong Oak tree. From something as simple yet beautiful as an acorn we have seen steady growth. With the branches reaching far and wide into Leicestershire, roots that hold strong through harsh weather. Now at ncounters end we are seeing tire-swings, birds nesting in the branches, a meeting place of a community and a spectacle that people look at in awe and wonder. I imagine Engage as one of the acorns that fell off of the mighty Oak tree, we are getting very excited to see how this grows.

If you would like to pray for us we would be very grateful. For any more info please contact me (ben@realityyouthproject.co.uk) or our events manager (bez@realityyouthproject.co.uk) and we would love to meet with you.

Look out for publicity and more details of ‘Engage:’ coming soon.

Thanks and God bless,

Hi all,

I would like to announce the 4 Pillars of Reality and our new ‘Friends of Reality’ scheme.

After some time in prayer we have decided on the 4 pillars of Mission, Discipleship, Reality UK and Income and Expenditure as our focus for the next few years, take a look at them: Strategic Pillars. However, we don’t yet have all of the money we need to see our vision become real. Therefore, Friends of Reality. It will be a way for people to support our ministry through prayer and finance, so that we can reach out to more young people across the UK. If you could help us we would be so grateful.

Thanks and God bless,

As 2018 approaches, we are really excited as Reality goes national. Ben Worth, who is taking over as CEO for Leicester, has been busy raising his own support and gradually taking on day to day responsibility for leading the team.  This time of transition has been hugely valuable and has reiterated to us the importance of succession planning.  I am stepping back from Reality in Leicester knowing God has got his man in charge!

In terms of the national vision, the need in our nation is overwhelming; the opportunities to inspire, train, equip and resource are beginning to emerge.  I’ve been able to speak to organisations both large and small about how we can partner with them and am praying that these conversations prove fruitful.

2018 is set to be a huge year for Reality and we look forward to all that God has in store for us.  Until then, from all of us at Reality, we wish you a joyful Christmas and peace filled new year.

Matt Brown

Following our announcement 2 weeks ago regarding Reality UK, we are delighted to inform you that Ben Worth will be taking over as CEO of Reality Youth Project in Leicester from January 2018. Ben has been with Reality for 6 years and has been the Youth Worker at Hinckley Methodist Church for the last 5. Ben will be responsible for leading Reality Leicester in all aspects of the work and we are looking forward to all that God has in store for this exciting next chapter. Please pray for Ben as he raises his own financial and prayer support and if you would like to support him, please let him know and he will be only to happy to talk to you.

“At this critical moment in history for the Church in the UK the statistics are stark:  94% of children and young people in the UK and Ireland remain unreached by relational Christian youth and children’s work.  On average, over 50% of churches in our country still have no provision for youth and children.  Between 40% – 59% of children and young people drift from God as they enter their late teens and twenties.  1 in 10 young people aged 5-16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder. Over the last 18 months the reality of these statistics has come sharply into focus.  Our passion has always been and continues to be to “Reach out with the good news of Jesus to Young People across Leicestershire”. However over the last year we have had more and more contact with people, churches, organisations and even schools across the UK asking for our help and enquiring about our work and the resources we can offer.  Against a back drop of fairly depressing statistics there is a sense at Reality we may be able to be part of the answer.  After a journey that started back in September 2015 God has brought Reality to a point where we are ready to launch Reality UK.   From January 2018 Matt Brown will be stepping down from the day to day running of Reality Youth Project in Leicester and be taking on the new role of National Director.

So what is Reality UK all about? Our vision is to take three big impact youth projects birthed in Leicester; ncounter Youth Led Mission, Authentic Discipleship and Abundant Life Courses and see them rippled out across the country for increased impact and transformation.  We believe that 3 specific projects can be part of the answer. Through ncounter Youth Led Mission we want to inspire a generation to see lives changed and communities transformed up and down the country. We want to train and equip the church in the UK to deliver Authentic Discipleship, helping young Christians make the increasingly difficult transition into adult hood.  We want to see Abundant Life Courses supporting young people suffering with poor anger management and low self-esteem all over the UK.

We are completely committed to continuing to serve our local churches, schools and communities in Leicestershire and with this in mind a new CEO for Reality Youth Project in Leicestershire will be announced in due course. Please will you pray for God’s favour on us as we take this step of faith.”

Welcome to Reality’s “Hope Working Wall”.

During 2017 and 2018, this is what we are going for:

1) 10% growth across Reality in young people engaging in our groups and 10% growth in young people becoming disciples of Jesus.

2) Super-sizing what we do in 2017 in 2018 at key points in the churches calendar.

3) Planning for events in 2018 to add momentum to our mission with young people.
