The Reality Internship–A year out to remember

Overview

As a member of the Reality Internship Team your base for the year will be the Reality Bus. The year is a mixture front line youth ministry (30 hours a week, mainly afternoons and evenings) and behind the scenes planning for the Reality Youth Team. You will be working in communities across Leicestershire reaching out with the good news of Jesus wherever we go. You will work as part of the crew for the bus and will be led by the Bus Manager. The year will run from September 2017-July 2018. You need no formal qualifications but you need to have a Christian faith and have three qualities: humility, integrity, and teachable.

Placement–The Reality Bus

In September 2014 the Souter Foundation gave us an out of service double decker bus and having raised £25,000 we transformed it into a state of the art youth club on wheels. The Reality Bus Project is an exciting new venture and has had a massive impact on our work. Our first full year out on the road was a huge success and we were able to build relationships with young people across Leicestershire. We go to two different areas of Leicestershire each night, Monday to Friday, and see 5-40 kids at each location.

Reality Youth Project work in partnership with local churches, schools and communities to make a positive difference in the lives of young people across Leicestershire, helping them to reach their full potential. One of the aims of the bus is to reach geographically and socially hard to reach young people, especially in places where there is little or no youth provision. The Reality Bus offers a safe place for young people to come and spend time with their friends and youth workers instead of potentially being involved in risky or antisocial behaviour. As well as having fun we want the bus to be a place where we can offer support and advice on issues such as self-esteem, anger management, separation and loss, alcohol and drugs, self-harm, bullying, staying safe online, eating disorders, employment, sexual health and the like. All of these issues hold young people back and stop them from reaching their full potential and we want the bus to be part of the answer and to help start those conversations.

Other Responsibilities

As an intern, you will be involved in a lot of the behind the scenes planning for Reality’s youth events. There are weekly Monday morning meetings held and as an intern you will attend these. They are a time of prayer, support, and planning. At these meetings all of Reality’s events are planned out and it’s a great experience to see the work that goes into an event. You may be asked to lead a portion of an event or co-lead a portion but this is all part of learning the ins and outs of youth work.

One morning a week you may be asked to come in to the office to do various tasks–phone calls, updating the website, copying, etc. Again, this is a great opportunity for you to learn the behind the scenes of youth work and to get another perspective on it.

Most of all, HAVE FUN!
